What to expect

Asta Nielsen’s Hamlet is not merely a woman playing a male role: the adaptation follows a then-current theory that Hamlet was born female and raised as a prince. That premise transforms inheritance, desire, and surveillance throughout the tragedy.

How to ease in

Know the film’s central departure before starting. Once Hamlet’s concealed sex is clear, familiar relationships with Horatio, Ophelia, and the court acquire a different pressure.

Heads-up

A quick, non-exhaustive note Includes murder, suicide, misogyny, gender concealment, violence, death, and a major departure from Shakespeare.

This Hamlet is always interpreting others while protecting the fact through which others would reinterpret Hamlet. I find the double labour of investigation and self-concealment the film’s most compelling tension.
