Gutiérrez Alea combines fiction, documentary fragments, archival material, voice-over, and jagged editing to place the viewer inside a consciousness the film continually questions. Historical immediacy and personal detachment become competing forms of evidence.
How to ease in
Do not assume the voice-over is the film’s judgement. Compare Sergio’s claims with the women he describes, the street material around him, and the edits that interrupt his preferred version of himself.
