What to expect
Desire is presented as a disruption to a settled social position. Moreau's character is already dissatisfied before the passing stranger appears, so the new encounter is not simply a contest between a husband and a lover. Malle places the attraction on the boundary between a cultivated bourgeois world and the possibility of leaving it. Approach its sensuality together with that dissatisfaction, rather than as a universal prescription for freedom.
How to ease in
Establish the three different relationships before following the new encounter. Ask what the woman wants to leave behind as well as what attracts her. The historical controversy is context for the film, not a substitute for attending to its characters.
