Chahine makes the station a compressed city of workers, travellers, desire, commerce, union organising, and exclusion. Noir intensity and popular melodrama emerge from the same public space rather than from a sealed criminal underworld.

The station is the organising principle. Identify the newspaper seller, the drinks vendor, and the porter first, then let the crowds show how private longing and public labour continually collide.

Trains keep offering departure to everyone except the man whose gaze tries to hold the station still. I find the crowds exciting until obsession turns all that movement into a narrowing corridor.
