どんな作品か
Paul Leni combines Gothic design, political melodrama, and Conrad Veidt’s expressive restraint. The film’s image of Gwynplaine shaped later popular culture, but its deeper force lies in the conflict between a face consumed as spectacle and a person asking to be seen.
無理なく楽しむために
Separate Gwynplaine’s expression from his emotion; the film depends on that gap. The court plot broadens late, but Dea and the travelling players remain the emotional home.

I find the fixed smile hardest to bear when everyone else decides what it means. Veidt lets grief, tenderness, and panic move beneath one expression, and I leave thinking about how lazily a crowd can confuse a face with consent.
