Qué esperar

Cinema was still a new attraction when Georges Méliès treated it as a doorway to the impossible. Painted sets, playful stagecraft, and handmade effects give the journey the logic of a picture book rather than modern science fiction. Its charm lies in watching film discover that it could invent worlds, compress adventure, and turn a simple illusion into shared wonder.

Cómo entrar en la película

The BFI Player presentation listed here runs 11 minutes; other editions can differ. Approach its painted scenery and transformations as a handmade stage illusion. Choose a version with a score you enjoy and let the painted scenery, sudden substitutions, and brisk tableaux set the rhythm. If a hand-coloured restoration is available, remember that hand-applied colour was part of early cinema too, not a later attempt to modernise it.

A tener en cuenta

Una breve nota no exhaustiva Contains comic violence and colonial-era caricature in its depiction of the Moon's inhabitants.

I like seeing the joins. Smoke arrives too quickly, bodies vanish with a puff, and the Moon looks unmistakably painted. None of that weakens the magic. The film's delight comes from inviting us to notice the trick and believe in the journey at the same time—a small reminder that wonder does not need to hide its tools.
