Home, apparently, is where the siege is. The sisters travel towards their father’s fort, only to find that reaching it cannot make them safe. I like that reversal of the journey’s promise: the place presented as a destination becomes another problem to escape. Arrival changes the danger instead of ending it, which gives the pursuit a reason to continue beyond one more picturesque mile.
