What to expect
The relationship is only one part of the encounter. Buildings, streets and the distances between people help give shape to the difficulty of connection. Antonioni makes the city more than a backdrop: the question is how intimacy can take hold in a setting that repeatedly draws attention away from it. Watch the changing relation between a person and the space around them before asking the romance to supply every answer.
How to ease in
Start with the simple change in the woman's life: one attachment ends and another begins. You do not need to supply a hidden explanation for every pause. Follow who moves towards someone, who withdraws and what the surroundings invite you to notice.
