What to expect

Georges Franju combines clinical procedure with fairy-tale stillness. The white mask is memorable because the film treats it neither as a simple monster face nor as a cure, but as the surface of a person trapped inside somebody else’s obsession.

How to ease in

Let the film’s calmness do the work. Its horror often arrives through orderly rooms, polite errands, and repeated routines rather than constant shocks.

Heads-up

I keep looking for Christiane’s choices inside a house organised around what will be done to her. The mask hides damage, but it also makes every movement of her eyes and hands more decisive.
