A Streetcar Named Desire: does Stella leave Stanley?

Stella is Blanche’s sister and Stanley’s wife. Their final scene differs between the 1951 film and Tennessee Williams’s play.

What happens to Stella, and why was the ending changed? · Ending spoilers

After the doctor leads Blanche away, Stella turns from Stanley and takes her baby upstairs to their neighbour Eunice’s apartment. She says she will not return. The film shows that departure.

In the play, Stella returns to Stanley after her sister is taken away. The film instead gives her a refusal in its closing scene.

The AFI Catalog places Williams’s rewritten ending within negotiations over the Production Code. The discussions concerned Stanley’s rape of Blanche and how the ending would deal with him. Williams defended the rape scene as essential to the play, while changing the screenplay to suggest that Stella leaves her husband.

AFI describes the separation as indicated “somewhat ambiguously”. Stella’s vow is clear, but the film does not establish a permanent break. Her immediate action and the eventual fate of the marriage are different questions.

À quoi s’attendre

The film converts theatrical confinement into pressure: heat, sound, bodies, and cramped rooms make every social performance difficult to sustain. Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando create competing kinds of danger.

Comment aborder le film

The characters often speak around what has happened. Follow changes in power inside the apartment, especially who controls the room when a conversation begins and ends.

I feel the apartment closing in before the story says what is wrong. Blanche’s performance can be cruel and exhausting, yet the film never lets exposure feel like justice.
