À quoi s’attendre

The Flying Ace turns a brisk railway mystery into a showcase for Black heroism, professional skill, romance, and aviation spectacle. Richard E. Norman's production gives its all-Black cast roles of authority and adventure at a time when mainstream American cinema routinely denied them such space. The effects are openly ingenious rather than seamless, but the film's confidence is part of its pleasure: clues, aircraft, disguises, and mechanical problem-solving keep the story moving. Its selection for the National Film Registry also recognises the importance of the independent race-film tradition it represents.

Comment aborder le film

Treat the film as a compact mystery serial rather than an aviation epic. Keep track of the missing payroll, the railway staff, and which characters have access to aircraft; the detective plot becomes easy to follow once those pieces are in place. The Library of Congress viewing copy runs about 66 minutes and includes a modern musical presentation distinct from the 1926 silent Work.

The flying machines are exciting, but I like the film's faith in competence even more. Billy Stokes returns as a hero and is allowed to remain observant, technically capable, and calm while the mystery grows around him. The tricks may be visible, yet the freedom imagined through flight still feels expansive.
