Why do criminals join the hunt in M?

The police raids are disrupting their business. To stop the crackdown, the criminal underworld organizes its own search for the child murderer, Hans Beckert. Police and criminals pursue the same man for different reasons, running parallel operations across the city. Goethe-Institut’s synopsis describes this conflict between the two searches.

Two manhunts, different methods
Who is searching? How the search works
The police They investigate the murders and raid places used by criminals. The pressure spreads beyond the killer: police activity makes ordinary underworld business harder to carry on.
The criminal underworld It recruits beggars as spies and street lookouts. People who spend their days in public places become a network watching for the man responsible for the crackdown.

Stanley Kauffmann’s Criterion essay traces both operations. Watching them side by side, notice how much each depends on organizing other people’s attention. The city becomes a collection of watchers, with different interests behind the same search.

What does the chalk M mean? · Plot detail

The M stands for Mörder, German for “murderer”. Chalked on Beckert’s coat, it makes him recognizable to the people following him. The title becomes a physical label that he carries through the street, without initially knowing it is there.

Kauffmann explains the word; the BFI’s screening notes describe Beckert discovering the mark on his shoulder. Look for the moment when being watched becomes something he can see for himself.

どんな作品か

M expands a citywide manhunt into a tense study of fear, surveillance, and collective judgment. Fritz Lang uses sound and silence as active parts of the story, letting an offscreen noise or repeated tune carry as much weight as an image. The film keeps shifting our position among police, criminals, crowds, and the hunted man, refusing the comfort of a simple moral distance.

The subject is grim, but the film is organized with remarkable clarity. Follow the parallel systems—the police and the criminal underworld—as each tries to find the same man for different reasons. Listen carefully when the image withholds information: a tune, a silence, or an offscreen voice often tells you where danger is before the camera does.

What frightens me is how quickly the whole city learns to watch. A glance at a stranger becomes suspicion; a harmless gesture becomes evidence. Lang makes sound memorable, but he also understands silence as social pressure. The film keeps asking whether a crowd searching for safety can recognise the moment it becomes another kind of threat.
