Was dich erwartet

Tourneur turns a loose Jane Eyre framework into an atmosphere of wind, drums, cane fields, and uncertain states of consciousness. Its beauty is inseparable from a colonial viewpoint the film sometimes questions and sometimes reproduces.

Tipps für den Einstieg

Let sound guide the night journeys. The film offers several explanations without forcing one final answer, so the emotional relationships matter more than choosing between medicine and the supernatural.

Gut zu wissen

Ein kurzer, nicht vollständiger Hinweis Includes colonial and racist framing, enslavement history, suicide, illness, coercion, death, and appropriation of Vodou beliefs.

The walk through the cane field feels both open and enclosed to me. The drums travel farther than the characters’ explanations, carrying a history the household can hear but never fully contain.
