What to expect

This is not a dubbed copy of Tod Browning’s film but a separately performed and directed production. Melford and his company use longer takes, mobile staging, and different emphases to create a closely related yet independent Work.

How to ease in

Approach it on its own terms rather than as an alternate audio track. The shared sets and script invite comparison, but the performances, camera choices, language, and 103-minute AFI record belong to this production.

I enjoy recognising a doorway and then discovering that the room moves differently around it. The familiar sets make comparison tempting, but Lupita Tovar’s alertness keeps pulling me back to the particular film in front of me.
