Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler’s dialogue is hard, funny, and evasive, while Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray turn calculation into erotic tension. The insurance office supplies the film’s moral counterweight through Edward G. Robinson’s claims investigator, whose professional intuition is also a form of affection. Venetian-blind shadows became a visual shorthand, but the film’s deepest influence lies in making doom feel like a series of freely chosen practical steps.

Neff knows how insurance claims are investigated. Naturally, he decides this qualifies him to create one. The useful detail is the broken leg: Dietrichson makes no claim because he never knew he had accident cover, and Keyes notices the omission. Neff has arranged the death but cannot supply the ordinary behaviour that should have preceded it. That is the plotting I buy here. The same professional knowledge that makes his scheme possible gives someone else a way into it.
