White Heat: Cody’s mother, the characters, and the ending

Three relationships help make sense of Cody Jarrett’s changing loyalties. His mother, his wife, and the prisoner he befriends each occupy a different place in the gang leader’s life.

Who are Ma, Verna, and Vic Pardo?

Ma Jarrett · Margaret Wycherly
Cody’s mother supports his criminal career and comforts him during his severe headaches.
Verna Jarrett · Virginia Mayo
Cody’s wife is involved with Big Ed Somers, the gang member who wants to replace him.
Vic Pardo · Edmond O’Brien
This is Hank Fallon’s prison identity. The Treasury agent is working undercover to win Cody’s confidence.

AFI’s cast and synopsis distinguish these names. Pardo and Fallon are the same man; keeping that alias straight makes the prison scenes easier to follow.

Why is Cody so attached to his mother?

Ma shares the life he is protecting. She encourages his ambitions and supplies a physical refuge when his authority collapses. Marilyn Ann Moss’s Library of Congress essay draws attention to Cody climbing onto her lap for comfort. Cagney’s posture makes the contrast visible: the man who frightens his gang can become small beside her.

What does Cody’s last line mean? Ending spoilers

Cody learns of Ma’s death while in prison. By the final robbery, the undercover agent has helped the police close in. Cornered at the plant, Cody climbs an oil tank and calls out, “Made it, Ma! Top of the world!” The tank explodes, killing him. AFI records the final scene.

The height gives his boast a literal shape while the situation empties it of triumph. He has reached the top of a tank with nowhere left to go. I hear the crucial part in his address to Ma: even after her death, she remains the person to whom he announces his achievement. His last declaration of power still needs an audience of one.

À quoi s’attendre

Raoul Walsh gives the gangster film tremendous physical speed while keeping its centre psychologically unstable. James Cagney’s Cody Jarrett shifts from tactical control to dependence and eruption without becoming predictable.

Comment aborder le film

The plot moves quickly, but the emotional map is simple: notice whom Cody trusts, whom he needs, and what happens when those two categories stop matching.

I watch Cody demand that the world confirm he is untouchable while every plan exposes another dependency. The film’s speed makes that contradiction feel like pressure building inside machinery.
