How does the Odessa Steps montage work?

Montage means that the choice and order of shots help create the action’s force and meaning. The Odessa Steps sequence is the fourth movement in the film’s five-part structure. Soldiers descend while civilians scatter. Try separating two rhythms: movement inside a shot, and the moment the film cuts to another view.

Three illustrative shots show downward movement inside each picture. Red lines mark the cuts between them, distinguishing movement within the image from the moments when the view changes.
Teal follows movement within a shot; red marks the cut to another.

Eisenstein’s analysis, quoted in the BFI programme notes, says that the soldiers’ steps do not march in time with the editing. A repeated movement can work against the cuts rather than simply matching them. He then identifies a change in downward movement: the rolling pram takes over from the descending feet. The tension changes form; it is not adequately explained by saying that every shot gets shorter.

The sequence also asks you to join images in your mind. The National Film Theatre programme commentary pairs a raised sword with a wounded face: the viewer supplies the connection between them. Notice how a detail becomes an action when placed beside another image. That is a practical way into montage: watch both what each shot shows and what its neighbours make it mean.

For a different kind of break, compare how Breathless makes missing time visible within a similar view.

你将看到什么

Battleship Potemkin turns conflict aboard a naval ship into cinema built from collision: faces, machinery, crowds, and movement gain force through the way they are cut together. Its energy comes less from a single hero than from people responding as a group. Even when its politics feel distant, the visual grammar remains direct, urgent, and easy to recognise in later action filmmaking.

如何轻松入门

Think of the film as five movements rather than a character-led drama. Names matter less than the pressure created by cutting between sailors, officers, machinery, and crowds. Its revolutionary politics are explicit, so there is no need to mistake it for neutral history. Watch how editing changes your sense of speed and danger—that technique is the main event.

I feel the film thinking in cuts. A face does not stay only a face; placed beside a boot, a rifle, or a moving crowd, it becomes part of an argument. That force can be exhilarating and unsettling at once. Potemkin is useful precisely because it makes persuasion visible—you can admire the craft while staying alert to its purpose.
