Histoire et personnages

How are Manfredi, Pina and Don Pietro connected?

Manfredi is a Communist leader in the National Liberation Committee. Don Pietro is the Catholic priest he asks for help. Pina is engaged to another Resistance fighter; Marcello is her son. The network brings people with different beliefs into the same struggle against the occupation.

Are Giorgio Manfredi and Luigi Ferraris the same person?

Yes. Luigi Ferraris is another name used by Giorgio Manfredi, played by Marcello Pagliero. It is an alias, not a second Resistance leader.

À quoi s’attendre

Roberto Rossellini’s wartime drama combines urgent location work with melodrama, comedy, and spiritual gravity. Its rough textures do not remove construction; they make private choices and public violence feel inseparable.

Comment aborder le film

Keep track of the resistance network rather than every name. The shifts between domestic bustle and sudden danger are intentional, showing ordinary life continuing under occupation.

The ordinary moments when people talk about food and family felt so warm that it hurt when they were suddenly broken apart. I did not feel as if I were watching a distant historical event. I felt as though I were standing close beside the people who lived in those streets.
