The Lady Vanishes: characters and ending

The 1938 film turns on whether Iris can persuade anyone to acknowledge a woman she remembers clearly. These are the three people at its centre.

Iris Henderson Margaret Lockwood
A young English traveller who insists the missing woman was real.
Gilbert Michael Redgrave
A fellow traveller who joins Iris in searching the train.
Miss Froy Dame May Whitty
The Englishwoman Iris befriends before she disappears.
Why do the passengers deny seeing Miss Froy, and what does the tune mean? · Ending spoilers

Why do the passengers deny seeing Miss Froy?

The refusals have different motives. Charters and Caldicott want to reach a cricket match in Manchester and fear an investigation will delay the train. Todhunter, a married barrister travelling with his lover, fears that appearing as a witness will expose their affair. His companion later confirms Iris’s account.

Dr Hartz and his accomplices, meanwhile, are concealing an actual abduction. Their deception benefits from the English passengers’ private priorities. Charles Barr’s Criterion essay reads this obstruction through class and national self-interest: people protecting their own comfort can assist political violence without sharing the kidnappers’ purpose.

Why does the tune matter, and is Miss Froy alive?

Miss Froy is carrying intelligence to the Foreign Office. The melody encodes a vital clause in a secret agreement between two European countries. Before attempting to escape, she asks Gilbert to memorise it and take it to Mr Callendar if she fails to get through.

Back in London, Gilbert suddenly cannot recall the tune. Then Iris and Gilbert hear a piano and find Miss Froy at the Foreign Office: she has survived. The film’s transcript on PBS records the message and final recognition; the pact’s contents remain unspecified. Iris also abandons her planned marriage and chooses Gilbert; the shared search has changed where her journey will end.

À quoi s’attendre

Alfred Hitchcock balances suspense with romantic comedy and social satire, keeping the mystery legible while every compartment supplies a new obstacle. The train setting makes evasion and observation part of the same elegant machine.

Comment aborder le film

Settle into the comic hotel opening; it establishes the travellers before the mystery tightens. Once aboard, watch who controls each conversation and who is eager to dismiss what Iris remembers.

I was less angry with the people who refuse to believe Iris than unsettled by how each of them chooses not to see the truth for their own convenience. It does not take a grand villain: enough people pretending not to know can erase one person's memory. Because so much of the film is funny, that fear took a little longer to reach me.
