She associates the man buying a flower with a luxury car. CCAJ's scene commentary explains that she connects the sound of a closing car door with her customer. In Gary Giddins's account, a limousine pulls away just after the flower purchase, and she assumes it is his.

The misunderstanding gives her an imagined wealthy customer while the audience sees the Tramp. Follow what she believes the car tells her about his arrival and departure. The scene lets a small difference in what the characters know set the romance in motion.

どんな作品か

『City Lights』が登場したのは、トーキーがハリウッドを一変させた後だった。それでもチャップリンはサイレント映画の語りを守り、映像と同期する音を、笑いの要所を際立たせるために使った。形式では流れに逆らい、感情にはまっすぐ届く映画だ。目の見えない花売りに尽くす放浪者の物語には、人違い、不安定な友情、街頭の喜劇、ボクシングの試合が織り込まれる。けれど感情がギャグを飾るだけのものになることはない。社会的な身分を取り違えることで、同じ出会いが、当人たちにはそれぞれ違う意味を持つ。誰が、どんな条件のもとで放浪者をそれと認めるのかに注目してみて。

無理なく楽しむために

チャップリンの過去の作品を知っている必要はない。繰り返されるお金のやり取りと身分の取り違えを追ってみて。それが喜劇と恋物語をつないでいる。音は映像と同期しているけれど、通常の会話による台詞はない。後の映画なら声に出して伝えるような情報を、身体の演技とクローズアップに委ねてみよう。
